Carisbrooke Castle is a historic motte-and-bailey castle located in the village of Carisbrooke, near Newport on the Isle of Wight. It has been an artillery fortress, a king’s prison and a royal summer residence. King Charles I was imprisoned at the castle in the months prior to his trial1.
The castle is now managed by English Heritage and is open to the public. It is a quintessential romantic castle with plenty to see and enjoy in the fresh open air
