Lizard Point

Penzance Bay, Cornwall

Two of the highlights of Penzance Bay are Merazion (Home to St Michaels Mount) and Lizard Point.

Merazion is a small seaside village with the causeway to St Michaels Mount accessible at low tide.

Lizard Point Lighthouse, located at the southernmost tip of mainland Britain, is a historic beacon that has guided vessels through the treacherous waters of the English Channel for centuries. The lighthouse consists of two distinctive octagonal towers, built in 1752, connected by a keeper’s quarters. The towers are painted white and topped with lanterns, making them a prominent landmark.

The lighthouse was first established in 1619, but the current structure was constructed by Thomas Fonnereau. It became the first electrically powered lighthouse in 1924 and was fully automated in 1998. The light from the lighthouse can be seen up to 26 nautical miles away, and it also features an automatic fog signal.

Visitors to Lizard Point Lighthouse can explore the on-site visitor center, which offers tours of the working lighthouse and insights into its history and the work of Trinity House, the organization responsible for its maintenance. The surrounding area is known for its stunning coastal views, rare bird sightings, and the occasional school of dolphins.

It’s a fascinating place that combines historical significance with natural beauty, making it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Cornwall.
